Visiting Arts – Call for Artists

11 Aug

1mile² Johannesburg, South Africa

Deadline:  9am, 17 August 2009

Open to artists living and working in Greater London, Birmingham and the Black Country

The programme

1mile² is a three year global arts programme that asks communities to map the biodiversity, cultural diversity, and aesthetic diversity (buildings and open spaces) of their local neighbourhood, working in collaboration with an artist and an ecologist. Communities are linked across the world through an internet platform that shares and challenges their findings, perceptions, ideas, experiences and creativity and encourages new connections between people.

Visiting Arts has established 10 participating communities in 2009, each working with a UK and an international artist. The selected artists create a link between these communities.

The residency is open to applications from artists working within socially engaged practice who can respond to the arts and ecology theme. Applications are invited from artists working in any medium including digital media, photography, storytelling, creative writing, performance, installation or interdisciplinary practice.

The opportunity

The residency provides an opportunity for a contemporary artist from Greater London, Birmingham and the Black Country to be based in Johannesburg for 8-10 weeks to develop their artistic practice through a collaborative investigation of arts, biodiversity and community. Priority will be given to artists based in the stated areas, though we are interested to hear from artists whose work is highly relevant and has potential for longer term engagement with those regions in the long term with Johannesburg/South Africa and/or 1mile² projects in the UK nations.

The residency is hosted in the Joubert Park area of Johannesburg. The project will be managed by JAG (Johannesburg Art Gallery), in partnership with Visiting Arts and Arts Alive.

The residency will involve the artist leading workshops with the local community and provide the opportunity to engage with UK artists, extend professional contacts and network. The artist will also co-curate content for the programmes website which will be a platform for their own and the communities’ creative work.
